Unit 24: Sound editing

Find examples of all of the following:

Mood and atmosphere
The purpose is to make the audience feel sympathy for the characters. The audience can also emphasis with them through the mood and atmosphere in a non fiction film which will show you the reality of it.
Comedy-https://youtu.be/vAfAKsd2P0k- In this film Step Brothers it plays music that is upbeat and makes the atmosphere funny along with the film.
Action-https://youtu.be/_PiheK_0xGo- In this film Central Intelligence the music makes the mood tense as the character is shouting, but its music that makes you edgy as someone is about to get caught. But the music gets a bit more up beat as there is a fight scene ahead and it gets you in the mood.
Horror-https://youtu.be/ryKepaMME_U- In this film Friday the 13th the music  is tense as it is trying to make the scene scary and the mood is frightening. The atmosphere is fast high notes to make you feel worried.
Romance-https://youtu.be/nKdSvhCg3VY- In this film Love Actually the music is slow and happy to show a romantic mood as someone proposes.
Documentaries like blue planet have moods where they will play sad music if a turtle has plastic around its neck. But this clip gets you excited as it shows the bird vs a fish. https://youtu.be/h4pxLHG0Wzs

Audio fade
The purpose , a fade is a gradual increase or decrease in the level of an audio signal. It may be gradually reduced to silence at its end (fade-out), or may gradually increase from silence at the beginning (fade-in).
Comedy-In a comedy film this could be to fade the music in if there is a sad scene this is the same for action films but this also could be when a scene is getting an action scene or fight scene.
Horror-https://youtu.be/73lYJC3b-Xk-Friday the 13th the scene is all happy and then is turns into a scene where she gets taken down and its a scary sound.
Romance-This could be when the sound goes up as the people in the film are happy and are hugging.
In blue planet 2 the audio fades as it get louder as David Attenborough speaks

Dialogue (examples of different types of dialogue think mood atmosphere settings and genre)
Dialogue can be useful as it can set the tone of a scene and you can see if someone is happy, sad, scared or angry.
Comedy-https://youtu.be/jXbSonXSLUI- In this film Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle you can hear Kevin harts voice go higher which implies he is making a joke or mocking.
Action-https://youtu.be/TIbZNmvyLBI- In this film Fast five the dialogue they are speaking and shouting this implies anger.
Horror- screaming is normally to indicate that they are scared and this is obvious in a horror movie.

Voice over
Voice over in films can be used to narrate over a story. this could be to say how they got here or explain a story.
In the Goldberg's tv series there is a voice over to explain what happens in the past and is telling a story-https://youtu.be/n43fM2wdu5A.

Ambient sound (film/tv)
Ambient sound (AKA ambient audio, ambience, atmosphere, atmos or background noise) means the background sounds which are present in a scene or location. Common ambient sounds include wind, water, birds, crowds, office noises, traffic, etc. Ambient sound is very important in video and film work.- from 'https://www.mediacollege.com/audio/ambient/'
Loads of films will use this as it will make a scene seem more natural.
https://youtu.be/jXbSonXSLUI in Jumanji you can hear the bugs in the background making noise which indicates that they are in a jungle.

Sound-bridge examples again different genres think Yasmin
sound bridge is a type of sound editing that occurs when sound carries over a visual transition in a film. This type of editing provides a common transition in the continuity editing style because of the way in which it connects the mood, as suggested by the music, throughout multiple scenes. In the fil Christmas Vacation https://youtu.be/gTKpKBzd7jg you hear them speak but then it will change scene and gets closer and closer to who is talking.
https://youtu.be/tLm1mhrCws4 Here is a montage of sound-bridge.

Foley sounds
This is named after the artist Jack Foley. A Foley artist will create sound effects for films such as stabbing noises and swords coming out for a battle.https://youtu.be/Gqs1KO_HKWY This is a video about a Foley artist showing what he does to make the noises.

Synchronous

This is where the sound matches the the scene and is precise like in Indiana Jones https://youtu.be/_kriJvddM64 the music matches the punching.
Asynchronous
This is where the sound matches the the scene so if it is an action scene it wouldn't be precise. https://youtu.be/Pz_URtSSPgw like in Die Hard

Sound Motif (TV/Film)
sound effect or combination of sound effects that are associated with a particular character, setting, situation or idea through the film. The sound motifs condition the audience emotionally for the intervention, arrival, or actions of a particular character. -from filmsound.org/terminology/hermeneutic.htm
This is iconic such as Darth Vader as he has an iconic motif his imperial marchhttps://youtu.be/hNv5sPu0C1E

ADR-

Automated Dialog Replacement this is when the actors voice over their lines again to make sure it matches the film.https://youtu.be/eXAifCfyLaw
